Mentor Training Program for Postdocs and Graduate Students

Do you want to run a research group some day?
Good science requires many hands. Most, if not all, principal investigators rely on their research groups to accomplish their projects. However, most scientists receive little to no management training. How do aspiring research leaders learn to engage and supervise other people in their work? How will YOU learn these skills?

This spring, the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center and the HMS/HSDM Office of Postdoctoral Fellows will again provide evidence-based training for mentors working with undergraduates and high school students on short-term research projects across the DF/HCC community.

Participants will have the opportunity to sign up to be DF/HCC Student Program Mentors during Summer 2019

The four-part curriculum will provide leadership training in the following areas:
  • Feb 7 Introduction to Mentoring and Aligning Expectations
  • Mar 7 Maintaining Effective Communication and Assessing Understanding
  • Apr 4 Addressing Equity and Inclusion and Mentoring Diverse Trainees
  • May 9 Short-term Research Project Design and Implementation.
Thursdays 2:00 to 4:00 pm • Countway Library, Room 403, HMS

Mentor a CURE student in your research environment this summer

Share your passion for cancer research!
The Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences (CURE) Program
  • Provides underrepresented Massachusetts youth an OPPORTUNITY to
    do hands-on science
  • Builds the PIPELINE of talented and diverse cancer researchers
  • Achieves measurable IMPACT for young STEM professionals
  • Facilitates essential management TRAINING for graduate students,
    postdoctoral fellows, and junior investigators

  • Commitment to mentor a CURE student for 8-12 weeks during the summer
  • Attend mandatory mentor orientation
  • Oversee student creation of learning plan, abstract, and final presentation
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback
