National Postdoctoral Association

Founded in January of 2003 through a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the NPA is housed at the headquarters of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington, D.C. The mission of the NPA is to advance the U.S. research enterprise by maximizing the effectiveness of the research community and enhancing the quality of the postdoctoral experience for all participants.

National Academy of Sciences Report

The National Academy of Sciences' (NAS) Personnel Needs Committee report on Addressing the Nation's Changing Needs for Biomedical and Behavioral Scientists. This report provides an insightful analysis of the training environment experienced by health-related graduate students and individuals in postdoctoral training. Additionally, the report offers a number of useful recommendations designed to improve the nature of graduate and postdoctoral training to more appropriately meet future needs.

National Institutes of Health Response to the NAS Report

The NIH response to the NAS report in which they discuss plans that encompass the funding of the National Research Service Award (NRSA) training grants and fellowships as well as students and postdoctorates supported by NIH funded research grants. This statement also describes areas in which NIH plans to depart from the findings and recommendations of the NAS Committee. They present this information in hopes that the statement will encourage a broad discussion within the scientific community and will inform the next quadrennial study of research personnel needs.

Sigma Xi Postdoc Survey

Funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Sigma Xi Postdoc Survey was designed to improve the training and research environments for postdocs by providing a better understanding of their experiences. Survey results are expected to enable research institutions to benchmark their policies and practices against those at peer institutions.
