Collaborating Office

Office of the Scientific Director
Mass General Research Institute

Massachusetts General Hospital

Mission: The Mass General Research Institute was created in 2014 to promote, support, and guide the hospital’s diverse research efforts. The largest hospital-based research enterprise in the United States, the Research Institute comprises over 8,000 people working across more than 30 institutes, centers, and departments. The Office of the Scientific Director is tasked with promotion of research with an emphasis on facilitating collaborations among our investigators internally, and engaging philanthropic, industry and venture capital communities externally.

A fundamental component of the Mass General Research Institute mission is helping scientists to engage in more productive and long-lasting collaborations with industry at all stages of their work: from basic research and proof of concept (early translation) to development and transfer to market (late translation). Since June 2015, we have been working toward implementing this component under the Strategic Alliance Initiative, a ‘continuum to research’ model which aims to connect the ongoing research at Mass General (research push) to market needs (market pull).

Overall Goal: Working closely with the Research Institute Director of Translational Research Training and Development and the Program Manager, Strategic Alliance, the intern will engage with scientists from different departments and centers at MGH working on early discovery projects, preclinical experiments, medical device prototyping and clinical trials. Specific tasks will be dedicated to the Research Institute Portfolio development and will include: formulate, in collaboration with the scientists, the “one-paragraph pitches” describing the essence of their work, help organizing Strategic Alliance events such as Research Portfolio Wrap Sessions involving Partners HealthCare Innovation Office and MGH Development Office, help facilitate research program proposals development, take part in biweekly meetings with Market Sector Leaders at the Partners HealthCare Innovation Office.

Specific learning goals:

  • Acquire first-hand knowledge and experience with strategic initiatives at the interface between academic research and industry.
  • Experience challenges and opportunities of bringing together scientists with multidisciplinary expertise and business development specialists to develop problem driven collaborative programs of interest to industry and venture partners.
  • Learn techniques to create impactful, concise content for the Research Institute Portfolio.

Potential Projects

Note: Project details may change based on the needs of the collaborating office.

  • Develop in collaboration with scientists the research portfolio content (project outlines and one paragraph pitches).
  • Help facilitate the development of program proposals for industry and ventures.
  • Help organize and staff strategic alliance program events.

Time Commitment

  • 6-8 hours/week for 12 weeks.

General Information

  • The intern will work under the direction of Dr. Gabriela Apiou, Director of Translational Research Training and Development.
  • This opportunity is unpaid.
