MGPA Mentored Lunch

At this workshop, attendees met scientists who have taken career paths away from bench research/academia, learned how to position themselves for different careers, and had small group conversations with the opportunity to meet multiple mentors. The event concluded with an open networking opportunity.

CV and Resume Writing Workshop
Date: Thursday, July 24, 2014
Facilitator: Lauren Celano, Founder and CEO, Propel Careers
In this workshop participants learned: similarities and differences between resumes and CVs, how to highlight experiences and skills on a resume/CV, how to customize a resume/CV for different positions, what happens to their resume/CV after they apply, and, how organizations utilize resume databases. Following the talk, time was allocated for Q&A to address additional topics.

The GSD and the MGPA hosted an outdoor event where graduate students and research fellows were able to meet and socialize with other graduate students and research fellows. They also learned about ways to get involved.

Facilitators: Dennis Brown, PhD, Professor of Medicine and Director of Office for Research Career Development; Darlene Dartt, PhD, Professor of Ophthalmology and Senior Scientist at the Schepens Eye Research Institute/Mass Eye and Ear; and Bakhos Tannous, PhD, Associate Professor of Neurology, Director of the Experimental Therapeutics and Molecular Imaging Lab and Director of the Vector Development Facility
Do you know what happens after you send your grant application to NIH? In this presentation, MGH faculty with experience as NIH reviewers staged a mock review panel to show how grants are evaluated for funding. Three real grants were discussed, including funded and unfunded grants. Participants learned about membership of a typical review panel (study section), responsibilities of review panel members, what happens during the review meeting, what their grant’s priority score means, and how to communicate with NIH staff about their grant.

This session took participants on a brief tour of the digital universe and showed them how to connect with people online, what all the social media platforms are good for, how to manage their online presence and how scientists are using social media for research, networking, outreach, and more.

MGPA Self-Sponsored Green Card Information Session

The MGPA organized an informational session about the self-sponsored Green Card application process for international postdocs. Two expert immigration lawyers explained in detail the process and requirements for the EB-1 Person of Extraordinary Ability and EB-2 National Interest Waiver (NIW) categories.

This Responsible Conduct of Research workshop covered an overview of the peer review process, journal guidelines and unwritten rules, and ethical considerations for reviewers. Participants worked in a small group to review a manuscript, guided by the faculty presenters. Participants were assigned a short basic or clinical research manuscript to read before the session.

MGPA ImageJ Workshop
Date: November 19, 2013
Facilitator: Lai Ding, PhD, Harvard Medical School
ImageJ, developed at NIH, solves many processing and analysis problems in your research. This workshop taught particpants: how to open an image, how to merge channels, how to make AVI movies, how to adjust contrast, how to add scale bars, stack alignment, and cell counting and measurement. Participants brought their own questions, examples and laptops for a hands-on-experience.

The Center for Faculty Development hosted the annual MGH New Faculty Orientation for faculty across all departments that recently joined MGH. This served as an opportunity for faculty to hear from senior leaders and to familiarize themselves with key information to enhance their MGH experience. The three-hour session provided an overview of the MGH environment and faculty resources.

Achieving Independence from Your Mentor
Date: September 11, 2013
Panelists:Thilo Deckersbach, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychology, Director, Graduate Student Division; Javier Irazoqui, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics; and moderated by Dennis Brown, PhD, Professor of Medicine.
The session focused on: "Is it necessary to "cut ties" with your mentor in order to convince funding agencies, journal editors and colleagues that you are independent?" In most cases the answer is no. In this panel discussion, participants learned how others have navigated the path to an independent faculty position while continuing collaborations with their mentors. Geared towards junior faculty, this discussion helped form their own plan to achieve independence with positive results.
