The Academy at Harvard Medical School

The Academy at Harvard Medical School aims to advance the training of future physicians by supporting the educational activities of its most effective and innovative teachers.


Harvard Macy Institute

Since its inception in 1994, the Harvard Macy Institute has trained over 2,000 health care educators worldwide, through three highly regarded continuing education programs offered annually. The major objective of these programs is to help participants -- whether they chair departments, serve as academic deans, direct training programs, or create curricula -- develop the strategies and skills required to lead organizational change and drive innovation. The faculty who have participated in the Institute's programs have developed into an international alumni community committed to a lively ongoing dialogue on health care education reform and innovation.

Established with a grant from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, the Institute is a collaborative effort of Harvard Medical School, the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and Harvard Business School. Preeminent Harvard faculty members like Dr. Elizabeth Armstrong (HMS), Dr. Clay Christensen (HBS), and Dr. Robert Kegan (HGSE) work with colleagues from leading institutions around the world to design and implement the programs. Many program alumni return to the Institute to serve as faculty.

The Preparing Future Faculty (PFF)

The Preparing Future Faculty program is a national movement to transform the way aspiring faculty members are prepared for their careers. PFF programs provide doctoral students, as well as some master's and postdoctoral students, with opportunities to observe and experience faculty responsibilities at a variety of academic institutions with varying missions, diverse student bodies, and different expectations for faculty.


POD- The Professional and Organizational Development Network
The Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education fosters human development in higher education through faculty, instructional, and organizational development. POD supports a network of nearly 1,500 members - faculty and teaching assistant developers, faculty, administrators, consultants, and others who perform roles that value teaching and learning in higher education. The POD Network and its members lead and support change for the improvement of higher education through faculty, instructional, and organizational development activities.
